Recent winners of the NZ Hi-Tech Startup Company of the Year award, ZeroJet is a fast growing and exciting New Zealand business developing high performance electric jet propulsion systems for boats, accelerating the marine industry’s transition to sustainable energy. Their vision is to eliminate combustion engines on small watercraft globally.
ZeroJet was formed in 2019 by two entrepreneurs and outdoor enthusiasts, through a pivot from a dynamic 2014 venture in motorised jet boards. Today they are a tight knit team of 30 people (mostly engineers) who design and manufacture a plug and play electric solution for boat builders enabling them to electrify their range of boats to meet the growing consumer demand for electric.
They are about to enter their next phase of growth. With built up demand globally (particularly Australia, US & Europe) from consumers and leading boat manufacturers, a clear product development plan in place for the next few years, as well as strong investment, they are now ready to capitalise on these exciting growth aspirations.
About the Role:
Reporting into a highly commercial and knowledgeable Board, the new CEO will lead the business in every respect and have overall responsibility for the performance of the business. Along with the Board you will set the strategy, direction & operating priorities for the ZeroJet business and lead and inspire a team of 30 people to achieve their ambitious global growth plans.
After several years of heavy product development, they now have a world class product, so this role is really focused on growth. Key responsibilities include.

About the Role:

- Establishing offshore manufacturing and supply chains in order to scale the business.
- Driving sales and marketing initiatives to boat Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), including expanding the existing OEM partner network.
- Developing an international expansion strategy and leading ZeroJets entry into export markets, including forging new OEM partnerships internationally.
- Product development and expanding the existing range to larger tender boats.
- Continuing the already great work done building a motivated, ambitious, and high performing team, with Health & Safety, Product Cost, and Quality Control being key priorities.
- Collaboration with key external stakeholders including NZTE, Callaghan and others regarding various funding opportunities.
About You:
This role requires an entrepreneurial, energetic, charismatic and hands on people leader that can create an environment that is high performing, collaborative, open, modern and has a clear vision and strategy. We are looking for someone from the following background.
- Preferably an Engineering Degree (Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics etc) or at least have strong experience in an Engineering environment.
- Strong international experience and have scaled an early-stage company or product globally.
- Strong sales & commercialisation experience in taking new hardware products to market.
- Manufacturing and supply chain experience with nuisances of maturing a product line and its production.
- Strong understanding and experience in hardware and product development.
- A passion for the marine industry and the sustainability focus.
